Music You Missed Monday #MMMplaylist Norebang Essentials: Boyband Edition!

It’s Monday again so its time for more songs!

This week we’re focusing on Norebang Essentials!

Are you a fan of going to the Norebang?

What is a Norebang/노래방?

노래-Nore means song and 방=Bang means room, it literally translates to singing room. It originated from Japan where they call it Karaoke!

Join us for another round of #MMMPlaylist!

(In no particular order)

Big Bang-Haru Haru (YG Entertainment)

G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri aka Big Bang are Hallyu Icons. Big Bang used to be the gateway KPOP band for people until BTS came out the gate snatching wigs, panties and souls etc. In 2008, Big Bang were at their first wave peak and they came out with, Haru Haru (Day By Day) and changed the KPOP game. G-Dragon self-composed this sad pop-ballad and it became an instant classic. I remember attending the 2012 Alive Tour and the whole arena sang Haru Haru back to Big Bang. G-Dragon actually cried that first night and then we all cried! You can’t be a Big Bang/KPOP fan and not know Haru, Haru. Pick up a mic and go sing!

HOT-Candy (SM Entertainment)

H.O.T were Shinhwa, DBSK and Big Bang before those kids left high school! In terms of how they shifted the culture of music, changed fashion and made the kids go crazy-internationally. They were created by SM Entertainment in 1996 (a seminal year for pop music worldwide) and helped herald the ‘idol’ style of groups where each member had their own color/style. H.O.T were: Moon Hee-joon, Jang Woo-hyuk, Tony An, Kangta, Lee Jae-won and their second single CANDY literally created a frenzy in Korea back in 1996. This song is a classic and I had to include it on this list! If you happen to be in Korea and sing this song flawlessly, you’ll be sure to get plenty brownie points from older Korean people. Learn it and love it!

Got7-If You Do (JYP)

Shoutout to JYP for consistently giving us great boy bands, from G.O.D to 2PM, 2AM to GOT7 who are finally getting their just dues. GOT7 are a seven-member boyband consisting of: JB, Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam, and Yugyeom. This band is very interesting because of their  multicultural nature-Jackson Wang is of Chinese descent and Bam Bam is from Thailand. This group is a very modern Hallyu group in the sense that they have members that can appeal to many demographics and have a more worldly sense of how to approach this whole music thing. After the success of the Just Right era, GOT7 came back with If You Do (니가 하면) and really legitimised themselves as a group to watch. If You Do is harrowing song about emotional abuse in relationships and I was really glad to hear a modern KPOP song that talked about abuse so openly. It’s a great song to sing at the norebang, especially when you’re in your feelings! Where’s that mic at?

DBSK-Mirotic (SM Entertainment)

DBSK were the first Korean Boyband to take Japan by storm and are true Hallyu pioneers. DBSK were: Yunho, JaeJoong, Kim Junsu, Park Yoochun, and Changmin.

In 2008, DBSK/TVXQ released their seminal hit, Mirotic, a slinky, R&B song about sex, sex and more sex. The song was so overtly sexual that the Commission of Youth Protection banned it! This ban lead to the song becoming infamous and a norebang classic. The ban also pushed DBSK more towards Japan where they’d go on to become kings. Mirotic is a norebang STAPLE and a song that you need sing at least once whilst dancing like this:

SHINee-Ring Ding Dong (SM Entertainment)

2009 was a huge year for our SHINee boys with the release of Ring Ding Dong. From the video to the live stages, you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the incessant sound of the chorus. That’s what makes this song SO FUN to sing in the norebang with a bunch of friends, wavy off some Mehwasul (Soju for the ladies~) and full off Korean BBQ. For those that don’t know, SHINee are an SM group that debuted in 2008 with members: Onew, Key, Minho, Taemin and the late Jongyun. They’re still around and still an amazing group. Please support SHINee especially in the light of recent events as they consistently put in the work and bring new concepts and sounds to the KPOP world.

BTS-Blood, Sweat & Tears (Big Hit Entertainment)

Bangtan Sonyeondan (방탄소년단) aka BTS are the darlings of KPOP and Hallyu right now and for good reasons! BTS are a hardworking group who release full albums, solo projects do amazing live stages, film for their reality shows, are amazing at fan service and still manage to remain very normal, down to earth boys. The group is: Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, Jungkook. The group is a mixture of rappers, singers and dancers and as current media shows, everyone is in love with them. I chose Blood, Sweat, and Tears (which actually has the same initials as their own band name-BTS) because the song incorporates R&B vocals, Moombahton, Rap verses and a powerful chorus that anyone can sing. Singing any BTS song in the norebang is fun because you’ll get to designate who gets to rap, who gets to sing and who gets to dance! Learn the song and sing it with your friends!

Catch us next week for another round of #MMMPlaylist!

Question: What’s the longest time you’ve spent in the norebang?
